(The Spread) – Which NFL head coach will be the first one fired in the 2011 regular season?
The coach with the best odds of being fired is Kansas City Chiefs’ frontman Todd Haley, who is currently 3/2 to get the axe. Despite winning the AFC West last season, the Chiefs are off to a disastrous start and just lost star running back Jamaal Charles for the season. Haley, who is in his third season, is the clear favorite to get the boot before the year is over.
The coach with the next best odds of being fired is Miami Dolphins’ Tony Sparano, who was almost replaced several times throughout his four-year stint in South Beach. Since Chad Pennington took the Dolphins to the playoffs in Sparano’s first season, Miami has failed to develop a quarterback and it’s one of the reasons why the head coach is on the hot seat. Sparano has 3/1 odds to be fired in the 2011 season.
Even though there teams are 1-1, there’s a chance that the Bengals’ Marvin Lewis (3/1), the Jaguars’ Jack Delo Rio (3/1), the Giants’ Tom Coughlin (7/1), and the Bears’ Lovie Smith (12/1) could be let go at some point as well. In fact, all four of these head coaches have been on the hot seat in year’s prior.
The long shots to be fired are Mike Shanahan (15/1), Norv Turner (15/2) and Andy Reid (20/1). Shanahan has the Redskins at 2-0 and Turner has the Chargers at 2-0, but Washington has a dictator for an owner in Daniel Snyder and San Diego has a habit of underachieving so things could change quickly for those two coaches. Reid, meanwhile, has a stacked Philadelphia team so if the Eagles fall flat fans will be calling for Reid’s job.
