(The Spread) – Two rookie quarterbacks will start against each other for their respective teams this Sunday, and oddsmakers have release player prop odds for the both signal callers.
In his first two games in the NFL, Cam Newton has thrown for over 400 yards in each game. He and his Panthers will face a fellow rookie this week in Blaine Gabbert, who will make his first professional start for the Jaguars on Sunday.
Oddsmakers have released prop odds for both Newton and Gabbert, which include over/under totals for passing yards for both quarterbacks. Newton has an over/under total of 250.5 for total number of passing yards, while Gabbert has an o/u of 185.5.
Will Newton throw for 400 yards or more again in the regular season from Week 3 on? Oddsmakers list the odds of that happening at +400 on the money line, and against that happening at –600. Most quarterbacks don’t throw for over 400 yards in a single game, but Newton has already done it twice. Considering the Panthers have 14 games remaining, one would think that Newton could accomplish the feat at least once more. But again, it’s a rarity for a QB to throw for over 400 yards so oddsmakers are betting against it.
What will Gabbert’s competition percentage be in Week 3 (he must start)? Oddsmakers have set the over/under for this prop at 57.5%, with the over carrying EVEN odds on the money line and the under set at –130 juice. The over may actually hold some value seeing as how Gabbert isn’t expected to throw many passes. And if he attempts several high-percentage short passes, then he could easily complete over 57% of his passes.
Oddsmakers currently list the Panthers as 3.5-point favorites over the Jaguars for this Sunday’s game. The over/under total for this contest is currently sitting at 43 points.
