ST. LOUIS, MO (The Spread) – It’s been a busy day down at Rams Park as Jeff Fisher officially announced the team’s new defensive coordinator.
The Rams officially hired Lions defensive backs coach Tim Walton as their new defensive coordinator. The team thought to have had a deal in place for Rob Ryan but in the “11th hour,” Ryan decided that he and the Rams weren’t a fit. The former Cowboys defensive coordinator wound up in New Orleans, while St. Louis plucked Walton from Detroit.
Walton has overseen average secondaries in Detroit over the past four years but that may have had as much to do with talent as it did coaching. Fisher tried to hire Walton a year ago and the Lions promoted him to DBs coach/third-down specialist, so clearly both teams think highly of him. He’ll join a staff that also features coaches Fisher, Dave McGinnis and Chuck Cecil.
Fisher also announced on Friday that the Rams are hopeful to re-sign free agents Danny Amendola and Steven Jackson. The team is expected to decline Jackson’s $7 million player option and also hope to bring him back for less money at some point during the offseason. Amendola, meanwhile, is unlikely to receive the franchise tag. The injury-prone receiver will test the market and could be a fit in New England if he doesn’t wind up back in St. Louis.
Finally, the Rams waived Titus Young just nine days after claiming him off waivers from the Lions. Fisher didn’t get into specifics as to why the team waived the troubled receiver, but clearly the team didn’t like what it saw after spending a few days with him.
“We spent probably four or five days with him,” Fisher said. “At the end of the interview process, we decided it was best for us to go another direction. Perhaps Titus is better suited for another organization.”
After being waived by two teams in less than two weeks, perhaps Young should sit out a year and get his attitude corrected.
