TCU is heading out of the Mountain West but while many Michigan fans were hoping that Rich Rodriguez would be heading out of Ann Arbor, he’s currently staying put.
ESPN.com is reporting that TCU has accepted a bid for full membership to become the 17th member of the Big East Conference. The school will officially join the league on July 1, 2012, so the Horned Frogs still have one year left to beat on Mountain West competition before joining the Big East.
TCU will have a stiff test for at least one year, however, as Boise State joins the MWC next season. The Broncos will be left at the altar after that though, as TCU, Utah (Pac-12) and BYU (Independent) will all be gone by 2012.
The change in conferences allows TCU to play in an automatic BCS-qualifying league beginning in 2012-13. The Mountain West currently doesn’t have an automatic bid to the BCS, thus the main reason to change conferences. The Horned Frogs are currently 12-0 and No. 3 in the BCS standings, but unless Oregon and/or Auburn lose on Saturday then TCU won’t be playing for a national title this season.
Neither will Michigan, which qualified for a bowl for the first time in three seasons but that might not be enough to save Rodriguez’s job. UM athletic director Dave Brandon says he’s not letting speculation about Rodriguez’s future change his timetable to evaluate Rich Rod’s job.
Brandon says that he doesn’t do performance reviews of coaches until their seasons are over, so Rodriguez will have to sit on that hot seat a little longer.
