UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (The Spread) – In the wake of Joe Paterno’s firing at Penn State, oddsmakers have released prop odds for who will be the next head coach of the Nittany Lions in 2012.
As it stands now, former University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer is a 2/1 favorite to take over at Penn State, although that seems like somewhat of a reach. Al Golden has the next best odds at 4/1 while Virginia’s Mike London is 9/2 and Houston’s Kevin Sumlin is 5/1.
Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald is 6/1 to take over as Penn State’s next head coach while Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is 15/2 and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen is 8/1. Boise State coach Chris Peterson is 10/1 while Rutgers’ coach Greg Schiano is 25/1 and current Monday Night Football broadcaster Jon Gruden is 50/1.

Golden is the current head coach of the Miami Hurricanes and was a three-year letter-winner and a two-year starter at tight end for Penn State in 1989-91. He earned his undergraduate degree in pre-law from Penn State in 1991, so he would make an obvious choice. While he has affirmed his commitment to the Miami football program, things change rather quickly in college football so his name is worth keeping an eye on.
There have already been reports that Penn State reached out to London before firing Joe Paterno last week. London is the current head coach at Virginia where he’s made the Cavaliers bowl eligible for the first time since 2007. In just his second season, London has been credited with turning around Virginia’s recruiting efforts after a 4-8 2010 campaign.
