BEREA, Ohio (AP) – Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel says the burden of responsibility that comes with winning the Heisman Trophy is ”heavier than the trophy itself.”
Manziel became the first freshman in history to win the Heisman as a freshman at Texas A&M in 2012. He can appreciate the added scrutiny that comes with being named college football’s top player and can identify better than anyone with the pressure Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is under.
Winston was recently suspended one game for making an obscene public comment on campus. Manziel says he hasn’t spoken to Winston since seeing him this summer, but planned to reach out and ”help him in as many ways as I can.”
Manziel says he learned who his true friends were after he won the Heisman. He keeps the trophy in his downtown apartment and said it provides him with daily motivation.
