BALTIMORE (AP) – Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy says he’s close to reaching an agreement on a contract extension.
Speaking Thursday, the day before Baltimore hosts the Kansas City Royals in the opening game of the AL Championship Series, Hardy said, ”We’ve talked. I wish I could say more, but I can’t say anything until it’s official.”
Hardy’s current contract expires at the end of this season. He earned $21 million over the past three years.
The 32-year-old Hardy batted .268 with nine homers in 141 games this season, then went 3 for 10 in Baltimore’s three-game sweep of Detroit in the AL Division Series.
Hardy hits well, but he’s known primarily for his fielding prowess. He won his second Gold Glove in 2013 and started in the All-Star game for the first time.
