PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates’ hopes for a deep playoff run ended with a loss to San Francisco in the wild-card game on Wednesday.
Yet the Pirates believe they proved something in 2014 while winning 88 games and making a second straight postseason appearance following a 20-year drought.
Manager Clint Hurdle says the Pirates are building ”something special” behind star centerfielder Andrew McCutchen and a core of young players that includes third baseman Josh Harrison and pitcher Gerrit Cole.
Pittsburgh faces some important decisions in the offseason. The biggest centers around catcher Russell Martin, who will become a free agent.
Owner Bob Nutting says he’s willing to dig deep into his pockets to retain Martin, who was one major reason Pittsburgh’s pitching staff held together despite a series of injuries.
