PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Sean Spence is making up for lost time.
Spence had three tackles in the first start of his career last week against Tampa Bay and will start again this weekend when Pittsburgh (2-2) faces winless Jacksonville (0-4). Spence was pressed into action when rookie Ryan Shazier went down with a sprained right knee last month against Carolina.
It’s been a long road back to football for Spence, who missed all of 2012 and 2013 after tearing three ligaments and suffering extensive nerve damage to his left knee in the final game of the 2012 preseason. Spence says he had to fight back tears when he ran out of the tunnel last Sunday.
Shazier says Spence’s comeback is a great story and his return gives Pittsburgh the kind of depth at linebacker few teams can match.
