Orioles’ Cashner offers a mixed bag in last start
Andrew Cashner whiffed seven but was charged with five runs over 6 1/3 frames Tuesday, taking a no-decision in the Orioles’ 6-5 win over the Yankees. The Yankees couldn’t touch Cashner through the first four innings – quite literally, as he had a perfect game going – but a one-out single and walk in the fifth preceded a three-run home run by Greg Bird. After rebounding with a scoreless sixth, Cashner was yanked after yielding back-to-back one-out hits in the seventh. He then watched both inherited runners score. This one wasn’t too far off from being a good start, and Cashner did tie a season-high with seven strikeouts.
Blue Jays’ Happ falls apart in fateful fourth inning vs. Red Sox
J.A. Happ allowed five runs, all in the fourth inning, lasting just 3 2/3 innings in Thursday’s loss to the Red Sox. Happ breezed through three innings and was on his way to another zero in the fourth before an error put a pair of runners on with one out. An Eduardo Nunez single loaded the bases and an RBI groundout by Sandy Leon plated a run but still didn’t spell doom — that was saved for Mookie Betts’ grand slam two batters later. As Ron Burgundy would say, that escalated quickly. Happ did strike out six before exiting. It’s been that kind of stretch for the southpaw, who was 10-3 with a 3.62 ERA on June 25 before losing the last three starts before the break. Happ, likely to be a popular subject of trade rumors in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, owns a 4.29 ERA and 1.19 WHIP through 19 starts overall.
MLB Betting Trends
Baltimore
The Orioles are 4-12 in Cashner’s last 16 starts and are 2-5 in his last seven road outings.
Toronto
The Blue Jays are 7-3 in Happ’s last 10 home starts and are 4-1 in his last five outings coming off nine or more days of rest.
Prediction:
Saturday’s game fell under the betting total and I see Sunday’s game between these division rivals doing the same. The under is 17-4 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams in Toronto, is 28-7-1 in the last 36 meetings overall, and has cashed in 10 of Happ’s last 14 starts versus the Orioles. The under is also 10-1 in Cashner’s last 11 starts and 5-0 in his last five road outings.
The Pick: Orioles/Blue Jays under 9
