Luke Weaver (3-1, 2.48 ERA) draws the start for St. Louis, while San Francisco will go with ace Madison Bumgarner (3-6, 2.85). Weaver has been excellent this month, posting a 1.71 ERA in 21 innings with 29 strikeouts and 17 hits plus six walks allowed. He gave up two earned runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk over 5 2/3 innings during a 10-2 win at Milwaukee his last time out. Bumgarner has a 1.04 WHIP with 81 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and a walk over seven innings in a 2-1 loss at Arizona his last start.
St. Louis comes in at 68-67 overall and 31-36 on the road, while San Francisco is 54-84 and 32-37 at home. The season series is tied 3-3 and the over-under is also 3-3.
On Saturday, the Giants claimed a 2-1 victory as Nick Hundley hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Hunter Pence contributed a pinch-hit single and scored a run, while Buster Posey was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Sam Dyson earned the win in relief. Lance Lynn threw eight one-hit innings for the Cardinals before Ryan Sherriff took the loss in relief by serving up the homer to Hundley. Dexter Fowler was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, while Jose Martinez added a hit and scored a run.
Bumgarner is scary to bet against, especially at home, but he also won’t have much run support to work with at all most likely. Weaver is coming into his own and a major reason why the Cardinals opted to shed the Mike Leake contract in a trade. Take St. Louis in a close one.
