Today’s pitching matchup has JC Ramirez (2-2, 4.43 ERA) on the mound for the Angels to face Martin Perez (1-3, 3.81) of the Rangers. Perez hasn’t been great. He hasn’t allowed more than 4 runs in an outing, but isn’t getting deep into games and has a high WHIP of 1.77. Ramirez is coming off a 7-inning scoreless outing in which he allowed just two hits and had seven strikeouts. He has just a 1.16 WHIP this season.
These two have split the first two meetings in the series. Los Angeles had a 6-3 win over the Rangers on Friday, while the Rangers had a 6-3 win on Saturday. Texas has now won three of the five meetings on the season. The Rangers are 11-13 on the year and 8-7 at home. Los Angeles is 13-13 overall and 4-9 on the road.
The Rangers scored four runs in the fifth inning of last night’s game to take a 4-2 lead that it held on to from there. Carlos Gomez hit for the cycle in the win and drove in three runs. Rougned Odor added a home run of his own, his fourth of the season. Mike Trout had a pair of hits in the loss and drove in his 18th run of the season.
Ramirez doesn’t have an ERA that will excite you, but he is coming off a great outing last week and could build on that. Perez has a lower ERA, but his WHIP is awful. He is somewhat fortunate that his ERA isn’t worse given how many players he is putting on base. If he struggles with that today, the Angels will make him pay for it. Go with the road team in this one.
