The pitching matchup for tonight’s game has Michael Fulmer (4-1, 2.54 ERA) on the mound to face Ubaldo Jimenez (1-1, 6.15) of the Orioles. Fulmer is emerging as the most reliable starter the Tigers have. He has pitched seven innings in three of his last four starts and has allowed just 13 earned runs in 46 innings. He also has 42 strikeouts and a WHIP of only 1.00. Jimenez hasn’t been much for the Orioles to count on. He has given up 23 earned runs in 33.2 innings. He also has 20 walks with just 24 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.51.
The Orioles took the series opener on Tuesday, 13-11 in 13 innings. Baltimore has now won three straight meetings with the Tigers. Detroit enters tonight’s game 18-19 overall and 9-8 at home while Baltimore is 23-14 overall and 10-11 on the road.
Tuesday’s game featured 24 runs, 38 hits and seven home runs. Baltimore got out to a 7-1 lead in the third inning, but the Tigers rallied and ultimately took an 8-7 lead on a J.D. Martinez grand slam in the seventh. Mark Trumbo answered with a solo home run with two outs in the ninth to force extra innings. Chris Davis then hit a pair of home runs in the 12th and 13th innings to lead the Orioles to a win. Davis finished 3-for-5 with four RBI while Trumbo was 4-of-7. Martinez finished with five RBI, as he hit two home runs and has four in his short start to 2017.
Both bullpens are depleted, as the Orioles had to use their last pitcher available in Tuesday’s win. This game will come down to which starter can go longer, and Fulmer certainly seems to be the likely choice. Jimenez has really struggled to get anywhere deep into a game while Fulmer has pitched 28 innings in his last four starts. At home, Fulmer should settle in and put the Tigers on his back.
