The pitching matchup in this game has Ryan Merritt on the mound for Cleveland to face Adalberto Mejia (1-2, 5.75 ERA) of the Twins. Merritt is making his 2017 debut, but he has one start in his career and four appearances. His MLB career has been 11 innings of work with six hits and two runs allowed. He has yet to walk a batter and has six strikeouts. Mejia has eight starts this season, allowing 23 earned runs in 36 innings of work. He has 33 strikeouts with 19 walks and a 1.58 WHIP.
These two opened their weekend series on Friday, with Cleveland getting an 8-1 win. The Indians have won five of seven meetings this season. Cleveland is now 33-31 overall and 18-14 on the road while Minnesota is 34-30 overall and 14-21 at home.
Friday’s game saw Cleveland’s pitchers hold Minnesota to just four hits. Carlos Carrasco went 6.1 innings and allowed the one run and four hits to get his seventh win. The bullpen pitched 2.2 innings of perfect ball. The Indians got to Minnesota quickly, as Nik Turley allowed all eight runs in just 4.2 innings of work. Edwin Encarnacion and Yan Gomes each drove in three runs for Cleveland. Encarnacion had his 14th home run of the season as well.
Neither pitcher leaves much excitement at the betting window. Mejia has looked rough and Merritt has little experience to go off of. The Twins don’t seem to be a good home team for whatever reason. They haven’t been able to bottle up their road success when playing in front of their fans. Also, Cleveland has had its number this year as well. They have four wins over the Twins this season by at least four runs. I think the domination continues this afternoon.
