The pitching matchup for today’s game has Derek Holland (2-2, 2.17 ERA) on the mound for the White Sox to face Ian Kennedy (0-2, 2.30) of the Royals. Holland has had good numbers despite not getting deep into games. He hasn’t allowed more than 2 earned runs in a single outing, but hasn’t gotten past 6.1 innings either. He has 23 strikeouts with 11 walks and a WHIP of 1.14. Kennedy has been pretty solid as well, but hasn’t gotten much run support. Kennedy has given up just eight earned runs in 31.1 innings. He has 28 strikeouts with 14 walks and a WHIP of just 0.99.
Six has been the magic number in this series. KC won the first game on Monday, 6-1. That was followed up by a 6-0 win for the White Sox on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Royals once again picked up a 6-1 victory. The Royals are now 9-17 overall and 7-6 at home while the White Sox are 14-12 overall and 8-7 on the road.
The Royals got a big pitching outing from an unlikely place on Wednesday night. Nathan Karns pitched six scoreless innings, striking out seven to earn his first win of the season. At the plate, six different players each drove in a run. Lorenzo Cain had a RBI triple while Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon each had a RBI double.
After a nine-game losing streak, the Royals have managed to take two of three from the White Sox at home. They face a tough pitching matchup in Holland today, but Kennedy has been just as solid, if not better. Kennedy has a sub-1 WHIP and just needs some run support to get in the win column. If the Sox struggled with Karns on Wednesday, they certainly should have trouble with Kennedy today. Stick with the Royals at home.
