Detroit is putting Jordan Zimmerman (3-1, 6.18 ERA) on the mound today to face Jesse Hahn (1-2, 2.53) of the Athletics. Zimmerman hasn’t had a great season thus far, allowing five runs in three different starts. He has just 16 strikeouts with nine walks in 27.2 innings this year. His WHIP is 1.63. Hahn has been pretty consistent for Oakland, going at least 6 innings in all five starts. He has allowed just nine earned runs in 32 innings of work and he has 26 strikeouts to only nine walks. Hahn’s WHIP is 1.03.
Detroit picked up a 7-2 win over Oakland in the series opener on Friday night. The Tigers are now 15-13 on the season and 6-6 on the road. Oakland comes into today’s game 12-17 overall and 7-7 at home.
The Tigers found some offense on Friday, putting up 7 runs on 11 hits. Victor Martinez continued his recent upswing, going 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBI. Jim Adduci had a pair of hits, including a three-run triple. With some run support, Michael Fulmer cruised through eight innings on the mound, strikeout out nine. Oakland had to use 3.2 innings from the bullpen in the loss.
Hahn has been great, but hasn’t gotten much help from his teammates at the plate. While Zimmerman doesn’t have great numbers, he should be able to compete against this Oakland lineup. Zimmerman, unlike Hahn, has gotten good run support. I think that will continue today once Hahn leaves the mound. Oakland’s bullpen isn’t much to write home about and the Tigers are heating up at the plate. The key for the Tigers’ recent upswing has been Victor Martinez, who has finally gotten on track. He has improved his batting average nearly 40 points in the last four games, racking up 7 hits. I think he continues to play well and leads Detroit to an upset.
