The Giants stunk in Arizona, receiving suspect pitching from either their starters or their relievers. Jeff Samardzija struck out nine Diamondbacks on Thursday but the long-ball did him in as he was pounded for six runs in 5 1/3 innings. Aaron Hill homered and walked, but it wasn’t enough as the Giants lost, 9-3.
While the Giants were getting rocked in Arizona, the Padres were lambasted in Los Angeles this week. Jered Weaver surrendered four runs in five innings on Thursday while Christian Bethancourt walked four of the five batters he faced. While the Giants should straighten the ship at some point, the Padres are expected to sink to the bottom of the NL West quickly.
Bet Tonight’s Giants vs. Padres Game
OUR PICK: Cain goes tonight for the Giants after an awful 2016 campaign and an equally unimpressive spring. The Giants are 2-7 in his last nine road starts dating back to last season and 1-4 in his last five outings against the National League West. They’re also just 5-21 in Cain’s last 26 outings when their opponent scores two runs or fewer in its previous game. Count this among the few wins the Padres will garner in 2017.
