From Rotoworld: Vargas pitched five innings and allowed two runs Wednesday in a victory over the Astros. Vargas has been one of the league’s best this year and he was coming off his seventh career shutout, but the Royals still smartly employed a quick hook tonight, removing him after 89 pitches. Even factoring in the shutout, Vargas’s last five starts haven’t been nearly as good as his first seven. Still, he’s keeping it together. He has favorable matchups next week against the Giants and Angels.
Blach yielded five runs in six innings Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers in Milwaukee. Blach can hold his own by inducing grounders and avoiding walks, but lineups with power-hitting righties are always going to be difficult for him and the Brewers are pretty well stocked there even with Ryan Braun on the DL. Blach is now 4-3 with a 3.64 ERA.
