Oakland opened this mid-week series with an 8-3 win on the road on Monday. Oakland has now won three of four meetings with the Tigers this season. The Athletics are 67-83 on the season and 25-50 on the road. Detroit is 62-88 overall and 34-41 at home.
On Monday, Oakland was able to get to Buck Farmer quickly, putting up five runs in 2.2 innings. Oakland didn’t get a long start from Raul Alcantara, but he didn’t allow a run in his 3.2 innings of work. Jed Lowrie drove in three runs to lead Oakland while Matt Olson and Chad Pinder each brought in two runs. Nicholas Castellanos had three hits to lead the Tigers.
Gossett has been showing some improvement over the last six weeks. After starting his season with an ERA nearing 6.00 for the first two months, he posted a 3.86 ERA in August and a 4.20 ERA thus far in September. Now he faces a Detroit team that doesn’t have much to offer at the plate with all of its strong bats traded or injured. Oakland shouldn’t have any trouble getting to Bell in a similar way they got to Farmer last night. Look for Oakland to cruise again.
