The pitching matchup tonight has Bartolo Colon (3-2, 4.46 ERA) on the mound for the Twins to face J.A. Happ (6-9, 3.90) of the Blue Jays. Colon has had some flashes of good things for Minnesota, but has allowed at least three runs in six of his seven starts with the team. Colon has 67 strikeouts this year with 29 walks and a 1.64 WHIP. Happ is coming off a 5-run outing against the Cubs. That snapped a streak of three straight starts where he allowed only 1 run. Happ has 101 strikeouts, 33 walks and a 1.35 WHIP this season.
Toronto has been struggling lately. The Blue Jays have lost five of their last six games entering this weekend. Toronto is 60-67 overall and 34-29 at home. The Jays are putting up 4.26 runs per game while allowing 4.91 per contest. Toronto is being led by Justin Smoak, who has 21 doubles, 34 home runs and 81 RBI. Josh Donaldson has added 22 home runs and 55 RBI in 84 games.
The Twins are coming off a five-game series loss to the White Sox this week. Minnesota is now 65-62 overall and 34-27 on the road. Minnesota puts up 4.74 runs per game while allowing just 5.03 per contest. The Twins are still without Miguel Sano, their leading hitter, due to a shin injury. Brian Dozier is now the team leader with 23 doubles, 26 home runs and 71 RBI.
The Minnesota lineup is clearly not the same with Sano on the DL. Their hitting isn’t something to have to contend with, which should allow Happ to get back on track. Colon hasn’t been awful, but he is pretty certain to give up a set of runs in his starts. Toronto has still be respectable at home and the Jays look to have the stronger starter and hitters tonight.
