Today’s pitching matchup has Kevin Gausman (2-3, 6.65 ERA) on the mound to face Joe Musgrove (3-4, 5.63) of the Astros. Gausman has been a little hot-and-cold. He has given up 35 earned runs over 47.1 innings of work, but also has five starts where he has only allowed 2 runs or less. He has a WHIP of 1.86 this season on 22 walks with 36 strikeouts. Musgrove is coming off a really poor showing where he gave up 7 runs in three innings. He has allowed 29 earned runs in 46.1 innings this year. He has 17 walks with 37 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.55.
The Orioles have lost four straight entering today’s game, including being swept by the Twins. Baltimore is 25-20 overall and 10-13 on the road. The Orioles are putting up 4.60 runs per game while allowing 4.56. The team is being led by Manny Machado and Chris Davis, who each have 10 home runs. Machado has also driven in 25 runs this season.
Houston had a nice four-game series win over the Tigers this week at home, taking three of the four games. The Astros are now 32-16 overall and 17-10 at home. Houston is posting 4.94 runs per game while giving up just 3.75. The Astros are led by Marwin Gonzalez, who has 11 home runs with 28 RBI and a .282 average. Jose Altuve is adding seven home runs with 22 RBI and 9 stolen bases.
Baltimore is in a funk right now. The Orioles were one of the best teams at home, and have lost four straight. They aren’t likely to right the ship on the road against Houston, a strong home team in its own right. Neither team has a great pitcher taking the mound today, but the Houston bullpen is one I trust more than Baltimore right now. The late-inning arms for the Astros have been getting the job done. Houston’s bats shouldn’t have trouble scoring either, giving them a comfortable win.
