Today’s contest has Jose Quintana (1-4, 5.22 ERA) on the mound to face Danny Duffy (2-1, 2.81) of the Royals. Quintana has been struggling somewhat this season, but is coming off a 6-inning, 1-run effort against the Royals last week. He struck out 10 batters and now has 30 K’s in 29.1 innings of work. Duffy is coming off his worst showing of the season, allowing six runs in 4.2 innings of work in the loss to the Sox. Duffy has a 1.22 WHIP with 24 strikeouts and 12 walks over 32 innings of work this year.
Kansas City took the series opener on Monday night, 6-1. The home team has now won all four meetings between these two this season. KC snapped a 9-game losing streak in Monday’s win. The Royals are now 8-16 overall and 6-5 at home. Chicago has lost two straight and is now 13-11 overall and 7-6 on the road.
The Royals finally got a win on Monday thanks to some solid pitching. Jason Vargas went six innings and allowed just five hits with one run. The Royals’ bullpen then pitched three scoreless and hitless innings to lock up the win. Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez and Jorge Bonifacio each had two RBI in the victory.
The Royals got a taste of victory last night and I think they can get it against today. Though this matchup didn’t work in the favor of the Royals last week. I expect Duffy to make the necessary adjustments at home. Yesterday’s win may have also sparked the KC hitters. Quintana will provide some opportunities for the Royals to get hits, and KC will take advantage this time around.
