The pitching matchup today has Ervin Santana (9-4, 2.97 ERA) on the mound for the Twins to face Josh Tomlin (4-8, 6.07) of the Indians. Santana has struggled in his last two starts, allowing 11 earned runs over 10 innings. He has 74 strikeouts and 36 walks this season with a 1.02 WHIP. Tomlin is also struggling, allowing nine earned runs over his last two starts of 9.2 innings. He has 56 strikeouts this year with just six walks and his WHIP is 1.40.
Minnesota has won the first two games of the series, taking a 5-0 win on Friday and a 4-2 win on Saturday. The road team has now won six straight between these two. Cleveland is now 39-34 overall and 15-19 at home. Minnesota is 38-34 overall and 22-9 on the road.
Errors played a big role in Saturday’s game, as Cleveland committed two to ruin a good outing for Corey Kluber. He pitched seven innings and had 13 strikeouts without allowing an earned run. Cody Allen took the loss by giving up a run in the eighth. Kyle Gibson went just 4.2 innings for the Twins, but only allowed one run. The bullpen pitched the other 4.1 and allowed one run on four hits. Brandon Kintzler recorded his 20th save to close the door on Cleveland. Brian Dozier and Chris Gimenez each hit a home run in the win.
The Twins have just had Cleveland’s number this weekend. Minnesota has been a really good road team this season while the Indians have been shaky at home. Santana has struggled recently, but I think he will bounce back today. He hasn’t had three consecutive bad starts all season. Tomlin hasn’t been good either, and been more consistent at being bad. I think the Twins will light him up and give Santana some early run support.
