Mets’ Harvey hungry to get right vs. Padres
Matt Harvey’s April struggles elicited little more than a few shrugs. Now, the entire city of New York seems to be in hand-wringing mode.
Terry Collins’ staff leader gets another chance to work out the considerable kinks in today’s series finale against San Diego, with a 4:40 p.m. ET first pitch out West. Oddsmakers at online sports book BetDSI prefer the Mets this afternoon, while Andy Greene’s gang enters as a +136 underdog. The over/under total holds steady at 7.5 runs.
With the exception of that infamous outing in the Fall Classic, last season turned out to be a smashing success for Harvey. He overcame Tommy John surgery, won 13 games and reestablished himself among the game’s elite hurlers. Through the first month-plus of 2016, however, the struggle has been exceedingly real. His 2-4 record lags well behind other members of the rotation, and an ERA nearing 5.00 presents even more cause for concern.
Perhaps ultra-spacious Petco Park can help allay some of the growing fears around the Big Apple. Harvey’s 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three career outings against San Diego, which counters with Andrew Cashner. The flamethrower boasts three quality starts since April 16, but New York’s collection of explosive bats will present a stern challenge to the one-time uber-prospect. Yoenis Cespedes, David Wright and Michael Conforto all homered in last night’s 6-4 triumph.

We’re still not ready to remove Harvey from our deck of aces. Things could change with a poor showing vs. the Padres’ popgun attack, but that seems highly unlikely here. Trust in the Dark Knight.
