Alonso homer lifts Mets
Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead 2-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday night in a 7-6 victory at San Diego. The Mets trailed 5-2 in the sixth inning before gradually rallying for the win. Alonso ended the night 3-for-5 with a double, the home run, two runs and four RBIs. Jeff McNeil went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs from the top of the order. Amed Rosario was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Robinson Cano finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and a run. Seth Lugo picked up the win as he surrendered one hit with two strikeouts and a walk in two scoreless innings. Wilmer Font will make his New York debut tonight after being traded from Tampa Bay, where he had a 1-0 record with a 5.79 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 18 strikeouts over 14 innings.
Reyes has three hits in loss
San Diego lost by a 7-6 score at home Tuesday night against New York to drop to 20-17 overall and 9-11 at home. The Padres gave up three runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth to lead to the defeat. Franmil Reyes went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs to pace the offense. Ian Kinsler was 2-for-5 from the top of the lineup. Hunter Renfroe finished 2-for-5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Ty France was 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Adam Warren took the loss in relief as he gave up two earned runs on two hits over two innings, striking out one and walking one. Matt Strahm will start today for San Diego as he comes in with a 1-2 record, 3.03 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 27 strikeouts over 32 2/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets are 1-6 in their last seven home games. New York is 12-5 in its last 17 Wednesday games.
San Diego
The Padres are 7-1 in their last eight Wednesday games. San Diego is 5-3 in its last eight home games.
Prediction:
The Mets needed something like Alonso’s home run to get them trending in the right direction again, but I’m not sure if I trust Font to keep it rolling. While Font has the stuff and the tools, for whatever reason he’s never found his footing consistently at the MLB level. Strahm has pitched well since a rough start to the season and I expect him to be in good form this afternoon. Look for the Padres to wrap this series with a win and closer to .500 in games played in their home ballpark.
