Yankees’ Severino strikes out 10 batters in victory over Tigers
Luis Severino struck out 10 batters in eight innings Monday as the Yankees beat the Tigers 7-4 in the first half of a doubleheader. Detroit put two runs on the board against Severino, but only of them was earned. He looked terrific, yielding only four hits and issuing zero walks over eight impressive frames. He touched 99 mph on his 111th pitch of the afternoon. The 24-year-old right-hander is now 9-1 on the season with a 2.20 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 102/21 K/BB ratio in 86 innings. He’ll face the Mets at Citi Field next time out.
Mets’ Lugo goes four shutout innings vs. Cubs
Seth Lugo threw four shutout innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Cubs. Making his first start this year, Lugo gave the Mets all they could have hoped for, scattering three hits without issuing a walk in his four innings. He struck out three while throwing 60 pitches. Four innings didn’t qualify him for the win, and the Mets struggled to put up runs against Jose Quintana and company anyway, but it was still an overwhelmingly positive outcome for a team in need of positive pitching outcomes. The 28-year-old had been pitching well in his relief appearances to date as well, as he now owns a 2.21 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 37/9 K/BB ratio across 36 2/3 innings overall, and Lugo could actually be a decent streaming option Wednesday when the Orioles come to town.
MLB Betting Trends
Yankees
The Yankees are 4-0 in Severino’s last four road starts and are 36-15 in his last 51 outings overall.
Mets
The Mets are 8-3 in Lugo’s last 11 home starts but are 0-5 in his last five outings when he faces a team with a winning record.
Prediction:
No reason to bet the over in this series as the bats continue to be quiet on both sides. The under is 6-2-1 in Severino’s last nine starts overall, is 6-2-1 in his last nine outings coming off a quality start in his last appearance, and is 4-1 in Lugo’s last five home starts. With the Mets offensive struggling badly and the Yankees offense struggling for them, the under looks like the best play on the board Sunday night.
The Pick: Yankees/Mets under 7
