Volquez pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and walking just one while striking out six in a no-decision against the Nationals on Monday. The 13-year veteran worked out of a few jams while showing good velocity and an excellent slider. He threw 51 of 82 pitches for strikes while producing 10 swings and misses. Overall, it was a superb first outing for Volquez.
Syndergaard was removed from Monday’s season opener due to a blister on his middle finger. He looked sharp before leaving, striking out seven batters through six scoreless innings. Due to the blister, he had his second start pushed back but he’s confident that he’ll be ready to pitch tonight against the Marlins.
