Pitching for Cleveland will be Josh Tomlin (7-9, 5.38 ERA), while Detroit will turn to Chad Bell (0-1, 5.48). Tomlin enters with a 1.30 WHIP and 86 strikeouts over 110 1/3 innings. This will be his first start since July 30 when he threw four no-hit innings with five strikeouts at the White Sox before leaving with an injury. He has a 5.02 ERA in nine road starts. Bell is making his first start of the season after 19 relief appearances. He has a 1.62 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 42 2/3 innings. He was stretched out to 67 pitches and four innings in his last relief outing August 23 when he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in a 10-2 home loss to the Yankees. The Tigers are 2-17 in games he’s pitched.
The Indians are 79-56 on the season and 39-27 on the road, while the Tigers are 58-77 and 31-35 at home. Cleveland has won eight of the last 10 meetings and the over-under is 3-5-2.
On Saturday, the Indians won their third in a row in the series by a 5-2 final. Corey Kluber threw eight innings of one-run ball to get the win, striking out seven. Cody Allen picked up his 23rd save. Abraham Almonte was 2-for-5 with a double plus three RBIs to lead the offense. Jose Ramirez was 2-for-5 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Edwin Encarnacion went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Yan Gomes added two hits. Jordan Zimmermann allowed five earned runs over five innings to take the loss. Alex Presley ended the game 4-for-4. Mikey Mahtook was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, while Bryan Holaday went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.
This has been a very uneven series despite it being in Detroit. You have the Indians on a roll and clearly ready for the postseason. And then you have the Tigers, dismantled by trades and suspensions as the franchise is firmly in rebuild mode. Saturday’s game looked like a spring training game lineup for Detroit and it shouldn’t be a whole lot better Sunday. While Tomlin hasn’t pitched in an MLB game in a while, he shouldn’t struggle to find success here.
