Pitching for Washington will be Max Scherzer (15-6, 2.59 ERA), while New York counters with Jacob deGrom (15-9, 3.55). Scherzer has a 0.91 ERA with 253 strikeouts in 191 1/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in a 4-2 win at the Nationals his last start. Scherzer has a 1.84 ERA in 15 road starts. deGrom holds a 1.20 WHIP with 228 strikeouts in 195 1/3 innings. He surrendered one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over seven innings in a 7-3 win at Atlanta his last outing. deGrom has a 3.36 ERA in 14 home starts.
The Nationals have a 93-61 record and are 48-29 on the road, while the Mets are 66-88 and 34-42 at home. Washington has won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under in six of the last 10 games.
On Saturday afternoon, the Nationals won 4-3 in 10 innings. Daniel Murphy was 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and two runs. Adam Lind was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs. Matt Wieters added a solo home run. Sammy Solis earned the win in relief, while Sean Doolittle picked up his 20th save. Nori Aoki went 2-for-5 with a run to pace the Mets. Kevin Plawecki was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Jacob Rhame suffered the loss in relief.
This is almost surely going to be a very low-scoring game, so if deGrom can keep the Nationals at bay he’ll give the Mets a decent chance to win. Scherzer hasn’t been perfect this month and while the Mets have a subpar offense, as long as they can touch up the NL Cy Young candidate for a couple runs it could be enough. We’re going to take a shot on the Mets.
