Today’s pitching matchup has Derek Holland (4-5, 3.43 ERA) on the mound for Chicago to face Jake Odorizzi (3-3, 3.53) of the Rays. Odorizzi is coming off a poor outing that lasted just 2.1 innings and saw him allow 8 runs (3 earned) with three walks and two strikeouts. He has 43 strikeouts and 17 walks this season over 51 innings and has a WHIP of 1.16. Holland is also coming off a poor outing where he also lasted just 2.1 innings and gave up 8 runs (all earned). He has 54 strikeouts and 26 walks over 63 innings this season and a WHIP of 1.35.
These two have split the first two games in this series, as Chicago picked up a 4-2 win on Tuesday and then Tampa had a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night. The White Sox are now 25-32 overall and 13-21 on the road while Tampa Bay is 30-31 overall and 17-14 at home.
Wednesday’s game was a solid pitching matchup as Jacob Faria made his MLB debut and lasted 6.1 innings, allowing just 1 run on three hits with five strikeouts. The Tampa bullpen then closed the door, pitching 2.2 innings of 1-hit ball. Mike Pelfrey had another respectable start for the White Sox, allowing 2 earned runs over 5.1 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Corey Dickerson and Tim Beckham each had a pair of hits in the win for Tampa, while Jose Abreu drove in the lone Chicago run.
Odorizzi has been pretty good this year. While he is coming off a poor outing, that was due to some errors behind him. Holland has a very poor outing against the Tigers last week and, while I think it will be improved today, I don’t trust him on the road as much as I trust Odorizzi at home. The Sox are just 1-7 in their last 8 road games and 1-4 in Holland’s last five starts.
