Gordon wins at Martinsville
Jeff Gordon has a memorable Sunday as Martinsville, as he won the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 to lock up his spot in the final race of the year for the Sprint Cup Championship.
Gordon had a strong car all race and he found himself in front of the pack near the end. The ending came down to a green-white-checkered finish and Gordon was able to hold off Jamie McMurray and Denny Hamlin for the victory.
According to oddsmakers, Gordon had 6/1 odds to win Sunday’s race, which means that a $100 wager on him to prevail will pay out an additional $600.
Gordon announced that the 2015 season will be his last and now he has a chance to win the championship in his final race. He will compete for the title at Homestead no matter how these next two races play out. Gordon, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick all finished in the top 10 to put themselves in good position to advance, while Joey Logano had a rough day. He was spun out by Matt Kenseth late in the race and ended up 37th, putting him eighth of the eight Chase drivers. He is 28 points out of fourth place with two races to go and may need a win to keep his championship hopes alive.
