The Celtics were the top seed in the East from last season and they owned the No. 1 pick in the Draft before trading it to the 76ers. Boston got the third pick in return and another future first-round selection. The Celtics drafted Jayson Tatum, a small forward from Duke at No. 3 to add to their roster. Boston could be active in the free-agent market as well or be looking for a way to add someone like Paul George to the team in a trade.
One team that made a splash on draft night was the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota struck a deal to bring Jimmy Butler over from Chicago in exchange for Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn. The two also swapped first-round picks. Minnesota added Creighton center Justin Patton at No. 16. With the moves, Minnesota is listed with +7500 odds to win the NBA Finals, which only seven teams have better odds. Butler will join Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins as a Big 3 in Minnesota. Chicago is now listed with +35000 odds to win the NBA Finals.
The Philadelphia 76ers had the top pick in the Draft and oddsmakers think that this may be the year that all of their losing may pay off. They selected Washington point guard Markelle Fultz No. 1 overall. He now joins the likes of last year’s No. 1, Ben Simmons, and Joel Embiid as a young stable of talent that could make a run in the East. Oddsmakers are also listed the 76ers with +7500 odds to win the NBA Finals.
