Sharps Appear to be Hammering Duke

In tracking the line movement on Wednesday morning, it would appear as though sharp bettors are hammering Duke ahead of the Blue Devils’ ACC clash with Virginia Tech tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book YouWager, the Blue Devils are now 11.5-point home favorites to beat the Hokies on Wednesday night. Duke opened at -10 at multiple online and Vegas sportsbooks but over the last two hours the point spread has climbed, first to 11 then 11.5.

Bet Tonight’s College Hoops Action

Why do we think sharp action is on Duke? First and foremost, oddsmakers don’t move the line for the sheer fun of watching how the betting market reacts. There’s always a reason, from a sharp bettor placing a large wager on one of the sides, to a key injury. In the case of tonight’s Virginia Tech-Duke clash, it would appear as though the wiseguys are attacking the favorite.

According to our College Basketball Public Betting page, 60% of the betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the Hokies. With that much action on Virginia Tech, why would the line be moving in favor of the Blue Devils? Doesn’t make sense, unless sportsbooks are taking significant action on Duke.

As of this writing, 52% of the money wagered at online sportsbooks is on Duke to cover the spread, this according to SportsInsights.com. The majority of the betting tickets are on the Hokies but the majority of the money is on the Blue Devils, plus we saw reverse line movement in favor of the favorite. If you’re comfortable laying double-digits on the Dukies tonight, the Blue Devils look like a sound play.

The home team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings between these two teams.
