Is WVU a title contender?

Top-seeded Kansas was handed just its second loss of the season on Tuesday night, falling to No. 11 West Virginia. Are the Mountaineers legit title contenders?

View Tonight’s College Basketball Odds

WVU picked up a 74-63 win over the Jayhawks at home last night to improve to 15-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Big 12 while Kansas falls to 14-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12. The Mountaineers shot just 33 percent from the field in the game, but forced Kansas into 22 turnovers to get the victory.

According to oddsmakers from oddsmakers at RealBets, West Virginia is still a longshot to win the national title, as the Mountaineers have 90/1 odds to win it all. Kansas remains the current favorite with 13/2 odds while Duke, Michigan State and UNC all have 7/1 odds.

West Virginia’s odds could definitely start improving after Tuesday’s win. It was their first win over a ranked opponent this season, but WVU’s lone loss came against Virginia. WVU has a solid balance of scoring, with four players averaging over 9 points and four averaging double figures. Leading the way is Devin Williams, who is averaging 14.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest.

WVU has never won the NCAA Tournament in its history. The Mountaineers finished runner-up in 1959 and last reached the Final Four in 2010. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins has reached the Final Four twice in his career. His second trip was in 2010 with WVU while his first came in 1992 with Cincinnati. He has never won the national title.
