The season started on Thursday with Wisconsin dominating UNLV 51-17. The Badgers won handily, but the Rebels actually covered the spread by ½ a point. Oddsmakers had UNLV as a 34.5-point underdog, just enough to cover the spread.
In the premiere game of the week, No. 4 LSU defeated No. 3 Oregon by a score of 40-27. The Tigers were able to establish a physical style of play that the Ducks couldn’t match. LSU came into the game as a 3.5-point underdog, giving them an easy cover with the victory.
In an interesting situation on Sunday, No. 24 West Virginia defeated in-state rival, Marshall, by a score of 34-13. The game was actually called early in the fourth quarter following a second storm delay. Oddsmakers set the point spread for this game at West Virginia -21.5, which gave Marshall the cover by ½ a point. That is a tough break for anyone that wagered on West Virginia and didn’t get to see the game finish out.
