Texas defeated Rice 34-9 in its season opener. The Longhorns led 13-9 midway through the third quarter before scoring the final 21 points of the game. Texas racked up 506 yards of offense in the win, including 229 yards on the ground. The Longhorns held the Owls to just 224 yards of offense and just 94 passing yards in the win. Garrett Gilbert threw for 239 yards and a touchdown for the Texas offense.
BYU defeated Ole Miss 14-13 on the road in its season opener. The Cougars were down 13-0 in the fourth quarter but rallied to win the game. The BYU defense was strong in the win, holding Mississippi to 208 yards of offense and also forcing two turnovers. BYU had 316 yards of offense in the win, but just 91 rushing yards. Quarterback Jake Heaps threw for 225 yards and a touchdown on 24-of-38 passing.
In terms of Injuries, Texas linebacker Demarco Cobbs is out with an arm injury while BYU running back Zed Mendenhall is considered doubtful for the game with an ankle injury and linebacker Austen Jorgensen is doubtful with a quad injury.
