CFB’s Playoff Four In Terms of Odds
With all the upsets that occured in Week 7, what does the new top 4 look like in college football in terms of the odds?
1. Alabama Crimson Tide
The Crimson Tide are the current favorites to win the national championship at 5/6 odds according to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv. While Clemson, Auburn, Washington and Washington State all fell over the weekend, Alabama stayed unbeaten while throttling SEC foe Arkansas. The Tide is off to another great start in large part due to its defense and running game. Nick Saban’s squad ranks No. 4 in the nation in total defense is No. 1 in rushing yards allowed, and No. 2 in points allowed at 10.1 per game. The Tide’s running game also is seventh in the nation, gaining 302.6 yards per game.

2. Ohio State Buckeyes (6/1)
The Buckeyes stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 56-14 win over Nebraska as a 24-point road favorite. Ohio State did lose to Oklahoma in Week 2 but given the amount of upsets over the weekend, the Buckeyes have leapt back into the playoff discussion. Despite being flawed early in the season, the Buckeyes are now second in the nation in total yards per game, gaining 577.3 YPG. They’re also third in points scored, racking up 47.3 per contest, and are allowing just 15.4 PPG (11th).
3. Clemson Tigers (10/1)
Despite losing 27-24 to Syracuse as a 24-point road favorite last week, Clemson is still listed among the top 4 in terms of the odds. The Tigers did lose a game last year and bounced back to make a run and win it all. The problem is the health of quarterback Kelly Bryant, who suffered a concussion on Friday night in that loss to the Orange. If he’s not healthy, Clemson will have a difficult time making another run this season despite having an outstanding defense.
4. Penn State Nittany Lions (12/1)
The Nittany Lions are a perfect 6-0 and have one of the best players in the nation in running back Saquon Barkley. He leads the team in rushing (649), receiving (395) and touchdowns (nine). Penn State ranks 17th in the nation in points scored and own the No. 1 defense in the country in terms of points allowed (9.0). The Nittany Lions haven’t been challenged yet, but perhaps that will change this upcoming Saturday when they take on Michigan.
