CLEMSON, SC (TheSpread) – Clemson has proven it is a national force in college football, but can the Tigers be a national title contender in 2015?
According to oddsmakers at GTBets, Clemson is currently listed with 22/1 odds to win the College Football Playoffs this upcoming season. The Tigers are getting odds of +250 to win the ACC Championship this year, while their over/under total for wins has been set at 9.
Dabo Swinney is entering his seventh full season with Clemson. The Tigers have really flourished in the last four seasons, winning at least 10 games each year, including an ACC title in 2011. Last year, Clemson went 10-3 on the season and 6-2 in the ACC. The Tigers suffered losses to Georgia, Florida State and Georgia Tech but closed the season with a 40-6 win over Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl.
Clemson has always been known for explosive players on offense, but it was the Tigers’ defense that shined in 2014, holding opponents to just 16.7 points per game, which ranked third nationally. The offense averaged 30.8 points per game, but that only put them 54th in the country. The 2015 squad has a pair of very talented receivers returning in Mike Williams and Artavis Scott. The key will be the man throwing the ball to them. Deshaun Watson appeared in eight games last year and threw for 1,466 yards with 14 touchdowns while rushing for 200 yards and five more scores. Watson is expected to have a breakout year in 2015 due to his dual-threat abilities.
Clemson will face Woffrd, Appalachian State and Notre Dame in home non-conference games this year and then close the season at South Carolina in the annual rivalry game. ACC home games include Georgia Tech, Boston College, Florida State and Wake Forest. Road trips will be made to Louisville, Miami, N.C. State and Syracuse. Clemson’s schedule suits up nicely with Florida State and Georgia Tech at home. If it wins at Louisville early, then the table is set for Clemson to be a real national title contender.
