College Football Week 8 Predictions: Iowa State vs. Texas Tech 10/21/17

Iowa State vs. Texas Tech Prediction

Will Iowa State continue its recent string of strong play and cover the spread versus Texas Tech today at 12:00PM ET?

ODDSMAKERS LIKE: Texas Tech. According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Red Raiders are 7-point home favorites versus the Cyclones after opening as a 5-point favorite. As for the total, the number hit the board at 71.5 but has been bet down to 69 at the majority of online sportsbooks.

THE PUBLIC LIKES: Texas Tech. As of this writing, 66% of public bettors are backing the Red Raiders and laying the six points.

HISTORICAL TRENDS LIKE: The underdog. In the last seven meetings between these two teams, the underdog has covered five times. The Cyclones are also 5-1 against the spread in their last six games overall, are 6-1 against the number in their last seven games when facing a team with a winning record, and have covered in seven of their last eight games played in the month of October.

WHO WE LIKE: Iowa State. Quarterback Kyle Kempt has done a fantastic job stepping in for Jacob Park, who left the team amidst “personal health issues” right before the Cyclones upset Oklahoma in Norman three weeks ago. Kempt completed 13-of-20 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday’s 45-0 shutout over Kansas. The 4-2 Cyclones are only two wins away from bowl eligibility and have an emerging NFL player in red shirt senior Joel Lanning, who is drawing praise from scouts. I’ll gladly back an underdog that won a week ago in conference play (even if that opponent was Kansas).

Texas Tech shot itself in the foot last week in Morgantown when it blew a 35-17 lead to West Virginia. If the Red Raiders continue to have issues closing games down, I like Iowa State to hang around long enough to make a run at a win in the fourth quarter.
