The Odds
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Nittany Lions opened as a 6-point favorite before the line was bet down to 5, which is where it’s at now. The total, which is what we’re interested in when it comes to doling out this free pick, is sitting at 43 points.
The Records
Penn State enters play with a 6-2 record and is 3-5 against the spread, while Illinois is 4-3 straight up and 4-3 against the number. The Fighting Illini are also 1-1 ATS on the road this season while the Nittany Lions are 3-2 ATS at home.
The Pick
Don’t let the low total scare you off: This game has low-scoring written all over it. Illinois has a solid defense led by linebackers T.J. Neal and Mason Monheim, as well as a pass rusher in Dawuane Smoot, who has five sacks and 11 tackles for loss thus far in 2015. The Fighting Illini’s front seven could present problems for an inconsistent Nittany Lions’ offensive line that once again could be without starting right tackle Andrew Nelson. Offensively, Illinois is likely to be without running back Josh Ferguson as well as receiver Marchie Murdock, which will cause issues for quarterback Wes Lunt against Penn State’s challenging defense.
