Notre Dame opened the season with a surprising 23-20 loss at home to South Florida. The Fighting Irish had a number of errors occur in the game, as they committed eight penalties and had five turnovers. Despite having 508 yards of offense and holding the Bulls to 254 total yards, Notre Dame couldn’t come up with the win. Tommy Rees threw for 296 yards and two touchdowns in the loss and was named the starting quarterback for this game after starting last week as the backup.
Michigan defeated Western Michigan 34-10 in a game that was shortened by weather. The Wolverines won their opener under new coach Brady Hoke thanks to a pair of defensive touchdowns. Michigan forced three turnovers from the Broncos and also had a number of sacks. The Michigan offense had just 288 yards but was in limited action. Quarterback Denard Robinson threw for 98 yards and rushed for 46 while Fitzgerald Toussaint had 80 yards on the ground on 11 carries and also had two touchdowns.
In terms of Injuries, Michigan punter Will Hagerup is suspended until Oct. 1 while Notre Dame tight end Jake Golic is out until mid-October with a arm injury.
