Michigan State has six national titles in program history, the last of which came in 1966. MSU now owns seven conference titles with last year’s success. This season marks the first year the Big 10 (now with 12 teams) will be broke up into two divisions.
Leading the way for MSU in 2011 will be senior quarterback Kirk Cousins, who threw for 2,825 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2010. Cousins actually has 35/1 odds to win the 2011 Heisman Trophy according to oddsmakers. Cousins will have a lot of help in the backfield, as MSU returns its powerful running back tandem of Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell, who combined for over 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2010. On defense, MSU losses a number of key players, including four of their top five tacklers from last season.
The 2011 schedule is somewhat favorable for MSU, as its only non-conference test will be at Notre Dame. Conference road trips to Ohio State, Nebraska, and Iowa will be difficult, but the Wolverines also get Wisconsin and Michigan at home.
In terms of covering the spread, the Spartans were 7-6 last season, but have been 51-67-5 against the spread over the last 10 seasons. In Dantonio’s four seasons with the Spartans, MSU has been at least .500 against the spread in three of those years. In terms of the over/under, MSU hit the under in 7 of 13 lined games last season, including four of the Spartans six road games.
