NFL News: Will Falcons get new deal done with Devonta Freeman? 5/22/17

GM confident Falcons will sign Freeman

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff says he’s confident that a deal with get worked out with running back Devonta Freeman.

While appearing on SiriusXM’s Schein on Sports, this is what Dimitroff had to say about Freeman’s long-term contract status:

“Like I’ve said before, we want him here and he’s a very important part of our organization,” Dimitroff said on SiriusXM’s Schein on Sports. “We’re ready in the relatively near future to have some discussions with their representation.”

Freeman recently told ESPN’s Josina Anderson that he wants “elite” running back money noting, “I want to be the best…I want to be elite paid. Whatever that is, that’s where I want to be – straight up.” Pittsburgh’s Le’Veon Bell is currently the highest paid running back in the NFL at over $12 million on the franchise tag. He’s followed by LeSean McCoy of the Bills and Doug Martin of the Bucs at $8.01 million and $7.15 million, respectively.

After rushing for just 248 yards as a rookie in 2014, Freeman had a breakout sophomore season in 2015, rushing for 1,061 yards and 11 touchdowns on 264 carries. Even though he received fewer carries in 2016 (227), Freeman still rushed for 1,079 yards and 11 touchdowns last year while helping to lead the Falcons to the Super Bowl. He also caught 54 passes for 462 yards and two additional touchdowns in the passing game.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Falcons are 13/1 to win the Super Bowl next year. The Patriots remain favored at 17/5, followed by the Cowboys at 10/1. both the Packers and Seahawks have odds of 12/1, respectively, to win the Super Bowl.
