Who Bettors Like in Saints vs. Panthers

Are public bettors backing the Carolina Panthers or New Orleans Saints ahead of Sunday’s Wild Card matchup at 4:40 p.m. ET?

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Saints are 6.5-point home favorites to beat the Panthers, who opened as 5.5-point underdogs before the line climbed. The total, meanwhile, hit the board at 48.5 before dropping slightly to 47.5.

As of this writing, 56% of public betting tickets are on the Saints to cover the spread. The majority of the money is also on New Orleans, also at a 56% clip.

The Saints are going for a three-game sweep of the Panthers. Since 1970, there’s been 20 instances of a team going 2-0 in the regular season and then meeting for a third time. Since that point, 13 times the team that was 2-0 completed the sweep, with the most recent coming in 2009 when the Cowboys swept the Eagles. The most recent loss for the team going for the sweep was the 2007 Cowboys, who lost to the Giants.

The underdog is 6-1 against the spread in the last seven meetings between these two teams while the road squad is 23-10 at the betting window in the last 33 meetings. That said, the Panthers have been horrible against the spread versus the Saints. They’re 1-4 against the number in their last five games in New Orleans and are winless at 0-6 against the spread in their last six games versus the Saints overall.
