Panthers vs. Broncos: How high will the Super Bowl 50 point spread climb?

How high will the SB50 spread climb?

Despite oddsmakers inflating the line in efforts to entice more Broncos backers, bettors still love the Panthers to cover in Super Bowl 50.

Our NFL Public Betting page shows that 80% of tickets wagered on this year’s big game are currently on the Panthers. On Monday we reported that 78% of wagers were on Carolina and despite the line climbing to Panthers -5.5 at many online sports books, bettors are still placing tickets on Cam Newton and Co.

The point spread for Super Bowl 50 opened anywhere between Carolina -3.5 and -4. But with so much money flooding in on the Panthers to cover, oddsmakers bumped the line up to 5, then 5.5 over the past 48 hours. The spread is even up to Carolina -6 at online sports book RealBet.eu.

What happens next will be interesting. Oddsmakers have already adjusted the line three or four times depending on the sports book. But will sharp bettors start showing up to take the Broncos at the inflated number? Or, with still over a week before kickoff, will oddsmakers inflate the line even more with public bettors willing to pay a steep price on Carolina? What number will be the tipping point for bettors?

Even if sharp and public bettors are both on Carolina (and it’s entirely possible), one would think that there will be some buy back on the Broncos at some point. There’s likely some wiseguys that will look to “middle” their bets in efforts to cash on a 4, 5 or 6-point Carolina victory.
