Flames prevail in shootout
Calgary claimed a 6-5 victory in a shootout Thursday night at home over Florida to improve to 6-5-1 on the season. The Flames won the shootout 2-0 as Sean Monahan and Matthew Tkachuk found the back of the net. Calgary led 1-0 through one period as Austin Czarnik put the hosts on the board via a power play goal off assists from T.J. Brodie and Milan Lucic. Florida tied it up at 1-1 in the second, but the Flames took the lead back on a Tkachuk goal on assists by Michael Frolik and Brodie. The Panthers tied it up at 2-2 later in the second period. Tkachuk continued his big night 32 seconds into the third period on a goal off assists from Frolik and Mark Giordano. Less than five minutes later, Giordano pushed the advantage to 4-2 on a goal assisted by Elias Lindholm and Monahan. Florida tied the score with a pair of goals over the next three-plus minutes and then went ahead at 5-4 with 5:01 left on the clock. Sam Bennett tied it back up at 5-5 with 2:43 to play in regulation on assists from Andrew Mangiapane and Travis Harmonic. David Rittich allowed five goals on 23 shots in the win.
Jets fall at home
Winnipeg lost by a score of 3-2 at home Tuesday night versus Los Angeles to drop to 5-6-0 on the season. Kyle Connor evened the score at 1-1 for the Jets with 2:53 remaining in the first period with assists courtesy of Bryan Little and Nikolaj Ehlers. After Winnipeg fell behind again 2-1 in the second period, Ehlers evened it up at the 7:32 mark on assists by Neal Pionk and Ville Heinola. The Kings scored the deciding goal with 14:08 to play in the third period. Connor Hellebuyck made 38 saves on 41 shots in the losing effort.
NHL Betting Trends
Calgary
The Flames are 9-3 in their last 12 games after scoring at least five goals the previous game. Calgary is 5-2 in its last seven games versus a team with a losing record.
Winnipeg
The Jets are 5-2 in their last seven games as an underdog of between +110 and +150. Winnipeg is 1-4 in its last five games overall.
Prediction:
The Jets have slumped lately but they have had more time than the Flames to prepare for this game and have a strong core. While Winnipeg is dealing with the injury bug, it still has enough on the ice to get the job done most nights. Calgary hasn’t been the most consistent team in its own right and especially on the back end. If the Jets can take advantage, it has a goalie in Hellebuyck capable of shutting the door on any given night. Winnipeg will be up for this hyped contest and I am betting on it to get the job done as a small dog.
