Capitals roll past Senators
Washington trailed 2-0 in the first period before scoring seven unanswered goals in a 7-2 home rout over Ottawa Tuesday night. Tom Wilson cut the deficit to 2-1 in the first period on a goal assisted by Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Lars Eller tied the score less than a minute later with assists going to Dmitry Orlov and Brett Connolly. John Carlson gave the Caps the lead for good with a power play goal early in the second on a goal assisted by Nicklas Backstrom. T.J. Oshie scored the next goal on the power play with assists courtesy of Brooks Orpik and Backstrom. Connolly made it 5-2 midway through the second on a tally assisted by Andre Burakovsky and Eller. Oshie scored shortly thereafter on assists by Orlov and Jakub Vrana. Kuznetsov completed the scoring 17 seconds into the third period on assists from Ovechkin and Wilson. Braden Holtby made 21 saves on 23 shots in the winning effort.
Islanders dominate Maple Leafs
New York dominated visiting Toronto Thursday night as it scored six unanswered goals in a 6-1 win. Anthony Beauvillier scored with 3:44 left in the first period to even the score at 1-1. The goal was assisted by Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal. Anders Lee gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead in the second period with his 22nd goal of the season, assisted by Brock Nelson and Jordan Eberle. Casey Cizikas scored a shorthanded goal to make it 3-1 with an assist going to Cal Clutterbuck. Valtteri Filppula added another goal with a minute left in the second with assists going to Andrew Ladd and Leo Komarov. Nick Leddy put the hosts up four goals in the first minute of the third period on assists from Clutterbuck and Matt Martin. Nelson completed the scoring with 11:19 remaining on a goal assisted by Eberle and Ryan Pulock. Robin Lehner registered 34 saves on 35 shots in the winning effort.
